A fugitive Mafia member, convinced he had broken the law after staying on the run for 20 years, was apprehended by Italian police with the help of Google Maps.
Gioacchino Gammino had left Italy after escaping from prison and was living a quiet life in Spain, where he had changed his name, found work as a cook and even opened a fruit and vegetable shop.
But Italian police managed to spot him in a photo on Google Maps, where he saw an elderly man outside a shop in the town of Galapagar, north of Madrid. The store was called “El Huerto de Manu” – Garden of Manus. In Spain, Gammino had changed his name from Gioacchino to Manuel.
The suspicions that he was the person they were looking for were confirmed when investigators discovered a nearby restaurant called “La Cocina de Manu” – Manus Kitchen.
On the Facebook page of the restaurant, which had been closed for some time, Gammino appeared in chef clothes. They recognized the 60-year-old because of a mark on his chin. The menu of the restaurant also listed a specialty, such as “Sicilian dinner”.
Gammino was arrested on December 17, but the news became public only in the first days of 2022. “How did you find me? “I have not even called my family in the last 10 years”, Gammino reportedly told the police after he ended up in handcuffs.
He was part of the Agrigento mafia clan, called the Stidda, a hostile criminal group with the Cosa Nostra, involved in bloody clashes in the 1990s.
Originally arrested in 1984, Gammino was also investigated by the famous, now deceased prosecutor, Giovanni Falcone. Gammino was convicted of murder in 1995, but escaped arrest again three years later in Barcelona. In 2002 he again managed to leave the cell disappearing for 20 years.
