With 68 votes in favor and none against, as the opposition MPs boycotted the voting process, the French proposal was approved in the Macedonian parliament, thus opening the way for the advancement of North Macedonia towards further European integration, and therefore also the hostage Albania of Skopje’s disputes with Sofia.
The MPs voted for seven conclusions drawn up by the parliamentary group of the Social Democratic League (LSDM), which deal with guarantees for the Macedonian language and identity. “The Assembly forces the Government, through the delegations in the talks, to adhere to the definition of unconditional respect for the language, identity and culture of the Macedonian people, as elements that are not negotiated with the EU. In the framework of the talks, the Macedonian language should be without clarifications, without additions and without footnotes”, it is stated, among other things, in the conclusions presented by the Parliamentary Group of SDSM.
The approval comes after three days of fierce debates in the Assembly, tensions and even attempts at physical clashes. Throughout the debate, MPs from the opposition party, VMRO-DPMNE, prevented the MPs from the ruling parties from giving their speeches by blowing their horns. The French proposal envisages overcoming the differences between Skopje and Sofia regarding the Macedonian language, identity and historical past, while the Bulgarian side asks the Macedonian side to include the Bulgarian minority in the preamble of the Constitution, as equal to other peoples.
“I assure you that our government is determined to “stay on the path of protecting the Macedonian language, identity, historical and cultural features of the Macedonian people through their equality with European nations”, Kovacevski said.
The reaction of the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who was also in Skopje, where she addressed the parliament there with a speech, was immediate, in an effort to convince them to accept the unblocking of the accession path, which North Macedonia has been looking for it for almost two decades, while Albania has been waiting for it for 8 years.
“Congratulations to North Macedonia for the vote that now paves the way for the rapid opening of membership negotiations. This was a historic opportunity and you seized it. A big step on your way to a European future. your future”Von der Leyen wrote on Twitter.
Even the Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi welcomed this moment, and even at first he wrote that the negotiations would be opened on Tuesday, but then posted a message without time limits focusing on welcoming the result of the vote, while saying that they look forward to the opening of negotiations. Even German Chancellor Olaf Scholz immediately wrote on Twitter that this vote paves the way for European Union membership conferences with North Macedonia and Albania. We love you as members of the European Union and we will be by your side all the way, he wrote.
Meanwhile, it is learned that Macedonia has been invited to Brussels on Tuesday, while the Albanian delegation arrives there on Monday afternoon.
