Volvo will only sell electric cars by 2030. The news has been confirmed by the Swedish car manufacturing house.
It will by then remove from production all models of cars with combustion engines, including even hybrids. The carmaker also plans to invest heavily in online sales and simplification of its products.
It is trying to take advantage of growing demand for electric cars, including China which is one of its largest markets. Carmakers are responding to pressure from governments around the world to speed up plans for electric cars. For example, new cars with diesel or petrol engines will not be sold in the UK from 2030.
Volvo chief technology officer Henrik Green said the company needed to change direction: “There is no long-term future for combustion engine cars,” he said. Volvo meanwhile will not invest in hydrogen cars as it does not think there will be enough demand from customers. There is also hesitation about the fact that hydrogen may be less available compared to charging points for electric cars.
