More than 11,000 illegal migrants have entered Germany this year – via Poland – from Belarus, German police said on December 27.
The European Union (EU) has accused Belarus’s authoritarian leader, Alyaksandr Lukashenko, of taking migrants from the Middle East and pushing them to the borders with Poland, Latvia and Lithuania as part of a “hybrid attack” seen in retaliation for Western sanctions. .
Most illegal migrants aim to arrive in Germany, a country that has increased border controls with Poland in recent months.
Germany’s federal police have said in a statement that they have registered 11,162 “Belarus-related” illegal entries this year, mainly in August-November, REL reports.
Police have said that the trend of illegal border crossings is currently declining, as 470 cases were registered in December compared to over 8,000 in October and November.
Under German law, migrants applying for asylum can stay in this country while waiting for the authorities to analyze the application.
The declining number of migrants crossing the border in December may be a reflection of a change in policy towards Belarus, as the Lukashenko regime was hit by a fifth package of sanctions, which also affected third countries, in order to stem the tide. of migrants.
Belarusian authorities have cleared migrant camps at the border and transferred more than 2,000 people to other facilities.
Several thousand Iraqis have returned to their homeland by plane, following reports that they have faced threats and severe conditions in the camps.
