At least 37 people have died in Bangladesh after a ferry caught fire on Friday night, police in the country said, as terrified passengers were thrown into the sea to escape the fire.
The tragedy occurred on a river about 250 kilometers south of Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka. “We found 37 bodies. The death toll could rise. “Most died from the fire and some drowned in the river,” local police chief Moinul Islam told AFP.
According to him, the fire started in the cabin of the ferry engine. Despite the fact that 310 people were allowed on the ferry, at the time of the tragedy there were at least 500 people.
Most of them were returning home from the capital. “About 100 burn victims have been sent to Barisal hospitals,” said Moinul Islam.
In August this year, 21 people lost their lives when a boat full of passengers and a cargo ship loaded with sand collided. While in two other accidents in April and May 54 people died.
During the last year about 100 people died as a result of ship accidents./REL
