A two-lane bridge collapsed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania early Friday morning, causing rescue crews to descend about 46 feet inland, while others formed a human chain to help rescue many people from a bus that had remained hanging over the bridge.
The collapse came just hours before President Joe Biden visited the city to call for the passage of his $ 1 trillion infrastructure bill, which includes bridge maintenance.
Authorities said there were minor injuries from the collapse, but no casualties. Drones were also sent to the area to make sure no one was left under any collapsed sections. Police reported that the collapse of the bridge occurred shortly before 7 p.m. A photo from the scene showed a passenger bus left on a part of the collapsed bridge.
City officials said the collapse caused a gas leak, but the situation is now under control. Pittsburgh Fire Chief Darryl Jones said three or four vehicles were involved in the crash and that 10 people were slightly injured, three of whom were taken to hospital. No person said he was not in danger for life. Authorities told drivers to avoid the area.
In a statement, the White House said President Biden would continue with plans to visit Pittsburgh today.
“Our team is in contact with state and local officials on the ground as they continue to gather information on the cause of the collapse,” the statement said. “The president is grateful to the rescue teams who rushed to the aid of the drivers who were on the bridge at the time.”
