Lunacek called Schneerberger’s initiative an important initiative. “An important initiative, please sign and distribute: Kosovo citizens should no longer be excluded from the opportunity to visit friends and family in the EU,” Lunacek said. “Kosovo has proved that all conditions have been met, and yet visa liberalization continues to be opposed by two EU members – France and the Netherlands. Visa liberalization for all other Balkan countries as well as for Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia has been realized for several years.

The European Parliament for years has demanded visa liberalization for Kosovo and the start of membership negotiations with Albania and northern Macedonia. But the positions of the European Parliament are not legally binding on EU member states. The final decisions are adopted in the Council by the member states.
