The head of the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, Albert Burla has stated that the coronavirus pill is expected to be available in the spring.
Burla added that the cost of the drug which is taken orally would be much lower than the basic medical treatments for those infected with Covid-19, but higher than a vaccine.
The head of Pfizer, clarified that the pill will be given to people who are being treated with coronavirus and not to prevent infection. Only 1 in ten people may need to be hospitalized after taking the pill, which will be given once in the morning and once in the evening for 5 days.
Pfizer CEO also spoke about the new Omikron variant, adding that a vaccine that could withstand the South African variant could be ready in March.
But Burla said current vaccines are strong against the new variant and that a new vaccine may not be needed. “It is likely that Omikron will prevail, but it is unlikely that the third dose will be below 75% effective against the new variant, but about 95%.” Pfizer chief said the first two doses provide better protection against the Delta variant, while the third dose offers more protection against the Omikron variant.
