US pharmaceutical company Pfizer is asking regulators to authorize its COVID-19 vaccine for children under 5, in very low doses. If the Food and Drug Administration approves the request, young children can start being immunized in early March.
Pfizer vaccines for children 6 months to 5 years of age contain only one tenth of the dose given to adults. There are 19 million children under the age of 5 in the United States, the only group not yet eligible for coronavirus vaccination. Many parents have been pushing for an immunization boost even in younger children, especially after an increase in the number of hospitalizations due to the Omicron variant.
The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday that a group of independent experts will gather in mid-February to analyze Pfizer data. The agency is not obliged to implement the decision of the expert group, but their suggestion is a key step in publicly verifying the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine.
The Food and Drug Administration can make a final decision within a month, but the final word on this issue rests with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
