State police have seized a quantity of 119 kilograms of cocaine inside a container of bananas.
In a press release, it is said that three more people were handcuffed. HS., 63 years old and GK., 31 years old, resident in Tirana, driver of the company. MM, 34 years old, resident in Tirana, administrator of an import-export company with Latin American countries.
Their detention came as a result of the operation codenamed “Romanat”, where police officers received information that some as yet unidentified persons stopped in Romanat of Durrës, a truck transporting a container loaded with bananas from the port of Durrës, for a warehouse in Vaqarr.
It is learned that as a result of the immediate response and coordinated investigative actions it became possible to find the container loaded with bananas. During the search inside it, the Police services found and seized as material evidence 119 kilograms of suspected narcotics cocaine.
Police say that from the first investigative actions it resulted that the container was transited to a port in Italy, where the Italian law enforcement authorities have ascertained the lack of lead and for this reason they have decided to exercise a control by ascertaining a lack of some boxes of bananas.
After identifying this absence, the Italian police decided to re-seal the container, accompanying it with a relevant report. Afterwards, this container arrived at the port of Durrës and after the customs clearance and control operations on the scanner, it was found clean and left the port, with the destination of the firm’s warehouses on the outskirts of the city of Tirana.
Only a few kilometers were enough, where along the national road Durrës-Tirana, in the place called Romanat, the truck transporting the container was stopped by some still unidentified persons, who for several minutes exercised control over the truck and the container with bananas, was then quickly removed after his control.
Such an event has worried the representatives of the banana importing firm who have decided to immediately notify the State Police.
The latter, in cooperation with counterparts and law enforcement agencies inside and outside the country, is learned that investigations are underway to fully investigate the case, as well as to identify and arrest other persons involved in this criminal activity.
