Police and anti-government protesters continued to clash today after nearly three weeks of anti-government demonstrations in Panama over fuel prices and the cost of living.
Meanwhile, the government and some popular organizations were holding talks to end the protests.
Representatives of the two sides met in Penonomé, 150 kilometers south of the capital, as clashes between police and demonstrators continued in several towns.
Meanwhile, grim footage was released from the southwestern city of Santiago de Veraguas, where police were trying to clear the Pan Americana highway blocked by demonstrators.
After several hours of confrontation, the police had temporarily freed the passage that had been blocked for more than a week by the protesters.
“We are heading for war, the government bombarded us with tear gas, we dispersed but returned to fight,” said protester Eduardo Cortés, for the AFP network.
There were also protests and temporary roadblocks in the capital, Panama City.
Archbishop Ulloa complained that the events could destroy harmony and unity among the people of Panama.
“The Catholic Church has always rejected violence and oppression, especially when we are in front of this dialogue that seeks to build a better Panama,” Ulloa said, referring to the talks.
