Polish President Andrzej Duda became the first foreign leader to deliver a speech inside the Ukrainian parliament since Russia launched its aggression on February 24. During a visit to Kiev on Sunday, he stated from the rostrum of parliament that Ukraine should not surrender to the demands of Russian President Putin and that it should decide for itself its fate.
The speech of the Polish president in parliament during his unannounced visit to Kiev, was greeted with applause.
“Concerns have been raised that Ukraine should make concessions in response to Putin’s demands. “Only Ukraine has the right to decide on its future… nothing (can not be decided) for you, without you,” Duda said amid applause from Ukrainian lawmakers.
The Polish president said that the international community should demand that Russia withdraw completely from Ukrainian territory.

“If Ukraine is sacrificed for… economic reasons or political ambitions, even an inch from its territory, it would be a severe blow not only to the Ukrainian nation, but to the entire Western world,” Duda said.
Poland is the birthplace of the Workers’ Union Solidarity Movement, which played an important role in ending communism in Eastern Europe, and Poland’s relations with Russia have long been strained. Since Russia launched the invasion of Ukraine, Warsaw has positioned itself as one of Kiev’s most determined allies.

Poland has insisted on strong sanctions against Russia and has raised its voice in support of Ukraine’s membership in the European Union. Mr. Duda reconfirmed support in his speech Sunday.
“I will not find peace until Ukraine becomes a member of the European Union,” Duda said on Sunday.
