U.S. police have imposed a curfew on the beaches of Miami, Florida, USA after five people were injured in several episodes of gun violence over the weekend, in one of which vacationers surrounded a police car.
The ‘disruption’ of the first holidays of the season has led the police to impose a curfew and a state of emergency in the city of Florida.
Several incidents of gunfire have caused unrest among the authorities and large crowds of young people have brought panic to the police.
Some reports spoke of unarmed police officers in at least two firearms incidents where five people were taken to hospital over the weekend.
The NBC Miami network said two girls received gunshot wounds in one of the incidents in the Ocean Drive area.
Speaking on the same net, Witness Lo Mills said: “We heard gunshots and saw people running down the street, I saw people falling and I pulled out my pistol to see what was happening.”
And in fact officials said about 100 firearms have been seized in the past two weeks on the beach, 37 of which in the last three days, according to the Sky News network.
Recent reports said that all the injured at the weekend in Miami Beach are not in danger of death, writes the British Daily Star.
About 400 police officers were deployed over the weekend to maintain order.
Miami Beach police also released a video showing several vacationers surrounding a police car, saying one of the officers was injured as he tried to resolve the incident.
They wrote: “This weekend we had 4 @MiamiBeachPD officers injured.”
Officials in Miami Beach said the curfew will last until Monday.
“In the last two nights, five innocent people have been shot in our streets,” Mayor Dan Gelber told a news conference.
Asked about the spring break crowds by the Miami Herald, Gelber replied: “We do not seek it, we promote it but in the end we just have to endure it.”
Miami Beach has decided since last week to ban the sale of alcohol after 2pm on weekends.
Gelber has said before: “Spring break is a difficult period for us so we are organizing something softer and less chaotic.”
Local media reported that the youth crowds were larger this year than usual.
