Premier League chief executive Richard Masters confirmed that TV deals with Russian companies are under consideration.
Speaking at the FT Business of Sport Summit organized by the Financial Times, the Masters explained that these agreements are “clearly under consideration”.
Rambler Media has the television rights to broadcast Premier League matches in Russia. A media which is owned by the state bank “Sberbank”. The latter was part of the sanctions imposed by the UK and US after the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
The Premier League also has a contract with Match TV, owned by Gazprom Media and Gazprombank.
The agreement is expected to enter into force in the 2022/23 season, for six years and with a value of 50 million euros. However, even this agreement can be canceled. Gazprombank has recently been part of US sanctions.
As for “Match TV”, it was Russian President Vladimir Putin himself on June 24, 2009 who, by decree number 715, ordered its launch.
The English Football Federation has a contract with “Match TV” to broadcast the FA Cup in Russia and UEFA has a special contract with “Match TV” to broadcast the Champions League.
The Spanish La Liga, which has a partnership with Match TV, is also investigating all economic deals in Russia.
