The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has said that the country’s institutions should discuss and see if human rights are being respected in the case of the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army who are being detained in The Hague.
The head of state spoke at a conference with President Ilir Meta where, among other things, she called the allegations of organ trafficking, mentioned in the report of the Swiss senator Dick Marty, this report approved by the Council of Europe.
“I believe that we will sit down and discuss with the institutions in the first place how we can do the best that the laws that the Assembly of Kosovo itself has approved, that the constitutional amendments that the Assembly of Kosovo itself has approved with two-thirds of votes, let’s see how much is being implemented in terms of protecting the rights of the accused in this case, because we are dealing with a context of fundamental freedoms and rights which are part of our Constitution and which have been undertaken by to be implemented by the special court itself”, said Osmani.
The president of the country has said that even the amendments and laws approved by the Assembly of Kosovo are based on whole chapters of freedoms and basic human rights which, according to her, Kosovo must ensure that they are not being violated.
While more important than the visit to The Hague, according to Osman, are the cooperation and the provision of the necessary protection for the accused.
A week ago, the former leaders of the KLA were visited by the Speaker of the Assembly, Glauk Konjufca, who addressed criticism of the functioning of the Special Court, stressing that it is closed and does not answer to anyone.
The former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army have been in detention in The Hague since November 2020.
Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi are facing accusations of war crimes, while in the first appearances of the judicial disgrace they have declared themselves innocent.
