Democratic Montenegro, a party part of Montenegro’s previous ruling majority, called for early parliamentary elections. This party made this request during a protest on February 9 in Podgorica.
Wednesday’s protest, with the slogan “Protecting the Electoral Will of the Citizens,” was led by Democrat officials. The protest was also supported by MPs and officials of the pro-Serbian Democratic Front.
They also expressed dissatisfaction with the possible formation of a minority government, which has been proposed by their former political partner, Dritan Abazovic, who is chairman of the URA Civic Movement.
The Democrats, the Democratic Front and the URA had formed the ruling coalition after the 2020 elections.
The February 9 protest was attended by several thousand citizens and activists of political entities, who held state flags and inscriptions calling on citizens to resist the “theft of electoral will.”
“People, prepare for the election. Our offer is clear, we are democrats and Europeans and we offer a European choice. “Let’s return the mandate to the people and let the people decide what the future will be,” said Democrat leader Aleksa Becic.
On February 7, Becic was dismissed from the post of Speaker of the Assembly, after 43 deputies voted for his removal from this position.
He stated that a possible new government depends on the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) of the President of Montenegro, Milo Djukanovic. Djukanovic’s party lost the last parliamentary elections in 2020.
“DPS will make two thirds of that new parliamentary majority, without DPS no decision can be made. “The new minority government will depend on the will of Djukanovic and the DPS,” Becic said.
Becic criticized URA chairman Abazovic, saying he intended to form the new executive with the support of Djukanovic’s party, which Abazovic has accused of corruption and organized crime.
“Imagine choosing judges and prosecutors along with those who were told they were thieves and criminals. “No one will be prosecuted without the permission of Milo Djukanovic,” Becic said, as protesters chanted “betrayal,” a word addressed to Dritan Abazovic.
The protest took place at a time when Dritan Abazovic is trying to reach an agreement with several political entities to form a minority government.
The protest was also to oppose the dismissal of Beçiq from the post of Speaker. His dismissal was initiated by Abazovic’s URA and supported by opposition parties.
Beçi.’S dismissal was preceded by the overthrow of Zdravko Krivokapi.’S Government, after the URA initiated a motion of no confidence in the Government in the Assembly.
The pro-Serb Democratic Front is demanding that the parties of the former parliamentary majority reach an agreement on the formation of a new executive.
