Hundreds of protesters in Baghdad, Iraq, chanted anti-American slogans as they marched to mark the anniversary of the assassination of a senior Iranian commander and a senior Iraqi militia official.
General Qassem Soleimani was killed in 2020 in a US drone strike.
Protesters on January 1 flooded the streets in Baghdad’s main square and “America’s death”, as they kept photos of Iranian General, Qasemi Soleimani, who was the leader of the QUDS forces of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and Iraqi Deputy, Abu Hamid Al -Muhandis.
The then US President Donald Trump had ordered the January 3, 2020 attack, where Soleimani was killed. The drone strike was in response to several attacks on US interests in Iraq.
Soleimani was considered the main architect of Iran’s military strategy in the Middle East and his assassination increased tensions between Iran and the United States.
Five days after Soleiman’s assassination, Iran fired missiles at an air base in Iraq where US forces were stationed and also attacked a base near the Iraqi city of Irbil.
On December 31, the Iranian Foreign Ministry posted on Twitter that “the US government has international responsibility” for the killing, which was described as a “terrorist attack.” The ministry said the White House is now in charge, a reference to Trump’s next administration, led by President Joe Biden.
Although the US-led international coalition announced the end of its “military mission” in Iraq in December, some 2,500 US troops and 1,000 coalition troops remain in Iraq and are training Iraqi security forces.
