As tensions continue to escalate in eastern Europe, Russian President Vladimir Putin has today received Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for talks in Moscow.
Russian media reported that the two leaders, who have both been in office for more than a decade, were greeted amicably after Putin said he preferred real meetings to phone calls.
The Russian president stressed the importance of energy agreements that kept the two countries bound. “Despite the obstacles, the trade volume has increased by 30% in the last 11 months. “This is a good sign and long-term projects are underway, such as the construction of nuclear power plants.”
He added that Russia and Hungary have signed long-term contracts under which the EU nation receives Russian gas at a reduced price until 2036. He added that Hungary buys gas at a price about five times cheaper than the European market.
Orban said that many people in Europe are afraid of an energy crisis, so Hungary is grateful for the gas contract with Russia.
Regarding the crisis in Ukraine, Orban was criticized by some opposition parties in the country for accepting Putin’s invitation, but the prime minister had responded that he wanted to prioritize a “balanced economic relationship with Russia.”
Hungary has previously criticized Ukraine for its policies towards several ethnic groups in the country, including Russian and Hungarian.
Orban told Putin he envisioned a long-term cooperation between the two leaders.
“This is our 13th meeting. Almost all my colleagues in European leadership are no longer like that. “We have been cooperating for 13 years and to be honest I do not intend to leave, I learn that you and I will cooperate for many years.”
