US President Joe Biden made a fuss with his statement on Saturday as he wrapped up his two-day visit to Poland, when he said Russian President Vladimir Putin could no longer stay in power.
Biden added that Vladimir Putin’s desire for “absolute power” was a strategic failure for Russia and a direct challenge to the European peace that has prevailed since World War II.
But shortly after his statements the White House rushed to clarify that President Biden was not calling for a new government in Russia. A White House official said Biden was “not discussing Putin’s power in Russia or regime change.”
Russia, on the other hand, has responded to the US president’s comments, saying it is not up to him to decide on the issue. This should remain only in the election of the people of the Russian Federation, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told CNN. President Biden’s comments at the Royal Palace in Warsaw came after a meeting with Ukrainian refugees sheltered in the Polish capital. Biden also called Russian President Putin a “butcher”, referring to what is happening in Ukraine.
