Vladimir Putin today compared the portrayal of Russia by the Western media with what is reserved for the well-known British writer JK Rowling author of the Harry Potter series, which has been left in the media darkness after comments described as homophobic.
In a televised speech, the Russian president condemned in a lengthy narrative what he called “progressive discrimination in all matters concerning Russia.”
Including some targets such as Hollywood, US agencies and Japan, he accused of “erasing” the history and contribution of the Soviet army in the fight against Nazism and Hitler, and mentioned the US nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
He said: “So they are just cynically erasing the truth. They recently deleted Joanne Rowling, the author of children’s books, with books published around the world simply because it did not respond to requests for ‘gender equality’.
“Now they are trying to wipe out our country, I mean the progressive discrimination of everything that has to do with Russia, a tendency that is unfolding in a number of Western countries.”
Rowling has come under fire from the powerful LGBT lobby after some comments against transgender men, suggesting that sex crimes committed by transgender women show that “gender identity is a lie”.
Criticism against her began when an elementary school removed her name for one of the sections, and several producers who refused to interview her for the 20th anniversary of the Harry Potter series.
This is not the first time Putin has mentioned him in a debate, as he said in December: “If anyone believes that a man and a woman are the same thing, then let them think. “But things make sense.”
Putin further likened the ‘culture of annulment of history’ to the burning of books by Nazi activists in the 1930s: “It is impossible to imagine such things in our country, and we are sure of that thanks to our culture.”
The 69-year-old condemned the public distancing and silence of the facts of books and historical events that did not conform to modern stereotypes, no matter how absurd they were.
He added: “It did not start yesterday, we know very well, in Hollywood they make films as if the only country that beat the Nazis was the US, without saying anything about the Red Army.”
“And in Japan the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is never mentioned, or said to have been carried out by some abstract allies. “The fact that the US carried out such a massacre at the end of the war is not even mentioned.”
But Russian authorities have also been accused of hiding documents on crimes against humanity committed by the Soviets.
A Russian historian known for uncovering Stalin’s mass political assassinations, Yuri Dmitriyev, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2020 on pedophilia charges many say are fabricated, according to Metro.co.uk.
