Vladimir Putin is not trusted, say Ukrainian soldiers on the front line, who remain on high alert amid tensions with Moscow.
In eastern Ukraine, the conflict with pro-Russian separatists has been going on since 2014, and they do not place much hope in the negotiations.
“Putin is spoken to with arms; this is the only language he understands. However, if diplomatic negotiations reach a peaceful solution to this conflict, without the need for us to lose territories, then I agree with them.”.
“The war here has been going on for 8 years. We have been hearing about negotiations for eight years, but if we take a look back from 2014-2015, practically nothing has changed. There are fewer bombings today, it is true, but people are still dying and we have problems on the front”.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky scored a landslide victory in the 2019 elections, promising also the end of the war. Five months after taking office, he secured a prisoner exchange with Russia.
But since then, Zelenskiy’s stance on Moscow has hardened, which has angered the Kremlin, especially as it has stepped up calls for the country to join NATO.
