In a letter to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he counted on “the continuation of a constructive dialogue with him” and “close co-operation on current issues on the bilateral, regional and international agenda”.
Putin’s letter to Vucic was handed over by Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Bochan Kharchenko at a meeting Wednesday in the Serbian Presidency.
“The dialogue between Russia and Serbia corresponds to the fundamental interests of the fraternal peoples and contributes to stability and security on the European continent,” Putin wrote in the letter, according to RFE / RL’s Balkan Service.
Putin also said that his talks with Vucic in Sochi, Russia “fully confirmed the strength of the strategic partnership between Russia and Serbia.”
Vucic and Putin met in Sochi on November 25th to discuss gas supplies to Serbia, Kosovo and other bilateral issues.
At this meeting it was agreed to reduce the price of Russian gas for Serbia and to increase imports.
Vucic also met with Putin in June 2020, when he took part in a military parade in Moscow.
Precisely because of its cooperation with Russia, Serbia is the target of criticism from the West, because as a candidate country for membership in the European Union, it has not yet harmonized its foreign policy with that of Europe.
