Thousands of citizens gathered in the Ukrainian capital on Saturday under the slogan “Unity March for Ukraine”.
They carried Ukrainian flags and billboards with pro-Ukrainian slogans.
About 2,000 to 3,000 people marched from Shevchenko Park on Maidan Square, also known as Independence Square, in Kiev with the aim of demonstrating unity in the face of a threat.
Several demonstrators who took part in the peace march spoke to CNN to express their support for a democratic Ukraine, free from Russian influence.
“We are together, we are strong. “And no matter how crazy our neighbor is, we still want to be a peaceful, democratic Ukraine.” said demonstrator Karina Kravchenko.
“We do not want to be friends, to be brothers with that crazy neighbor. “Stay out far, far away from that place.” said another citizen.
Another demonstrator, Vyacheslav Stelmah, told CNN that “Ukrainians will resist possible Russian aggression. “We will not just remain calm and silent as Russia poses a significant threat to our country.”
Among the many signs in the crowd was a large red one that read #PutinËarCriminal and #PutinMassMurderer.
The Ukrainian government continues to urge its citizens to remain calm in the face of the threat of a Russian invasion.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cast some doubt on suggestions that Russia could take military action as early as next week, and the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said it was critical that citizens stay calm, united and refrain from actions that undermine stability and sow panic.
