Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday (February 21st) ordered Russian troops to be sent to separatist-held areas in eastern Ukraine.
Western leaders have warned that military escalation could have dire consequences for Moscow.
Putin’s decision came hours after he signed decrees recognizing Ukraine’s two eastern regions as the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic as independent entities.
The decree states that the decision must be implemented immediately.
The decree also states that the Russian army will enter Donetsk “at the request of the republic to ensure peace.”
It urges the Russian Foreign Ministry to prepare an “agreement on friendship, co-operation and mutual assistance” with the Donetsk Republic and to send it to the Kremlin for signature.
The United States, NATO and the European Union have strongly condemned Putin’s decision.
The United Nations has stated that it fully supports Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within its international borders.
