Speaking today in Moscow at the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) summit, Vladimir Putin said NATO enlargement is a problem for Russia, so the country should look closely at what it described as the plans of the alliance led by US for global influence.
Putin added that Russia has no problems with Finland and Sweden, but warned that Moscow will act to expand military infrastructure in their territories as the two countries begin steps towards joining NATO.
Finland has a 1,300km land border with Russia while Sweden has a sea border with it.
Until now the two countries thought that NATO membership would be an unnecessary provocation for Moscow.
But apparently the policy changed after the Russian attack on Ukraine.
Putin said NATO enlargement was being used “aggressively” by the United States to worsen the difficult global security situation.
“What the reaction will be – this will be resolved depending on the threats that will be created for us. “Problems are being created for no reason, and we will respond to them accordingly,” Putin said.
At the same meeting, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko urged other members of the CSTO alliance to stand united and accused the West of trying to prolong the conflict in order to weaken Russia as much as possible.
Regarding sanctions, Lukashenko said: “Without a united front, the West will continue to increase pressure on the entire post-Soviet space,” he said in a televised address to Putin and the leaders of Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.// SkyNews /
