Rumored to be Vladimir Putin’s secret girlfriend, she has indicated that she will not know about Western sanctions as she leads a ‘Z’ parade in support of the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
Alina Kabaeva, now 38, has been seen several times in the video leading a parade of gymnasts, accompanied by the army choir in Russia.
The former Olympic champion has recently reappeared in Moscow after reports that a villa had been hidden in Switzerland since the start of the Ukrainian occupation. Some sources said she may have been hiding in a nuclear bunker in Siberia.
The latest event included some of the most patriotic songs of the Soviet Union commemorating the victory against Nazism, this time accompanied by the “Z” symbol which critics have compared to a “broken cross in the Russian version”.
Kabaeva wore her ‘fuchsia’ dress by London stylist Alessandra Rich.
As she wore a red ribbon on her chest, she made the connection between World War II and current events: “This theme and this story do not take us back to the past, they stay with us.”
Her words echoed those of Putin, who says his current war is against the Nazis who control Ukraine.
“This celebration is not only for our nation, but a celebration for every family. “Every family has a history of war, and we must not forget to pass it on to another generation,” Kabaeva said.
Performing girls in uniforms of different eras took part in the show.
Russia, Belarus and Ukraine were represented in the numbers, in forms where Soviet victory was brought to attention.
The full show will air on May 8, when the extensive Victory Day military parade in Moscow’s Red Square will take place.
Putin had expected to use the parade as a triumphant display of his attack on Ukraine but the war still seems far from over and the number of Russian casualties has exceeded 20,000.
In its first rerun last week, Russian media commented on some of the changes in appearance that suggested interference and stuffing.
Cosmopolitan magazine wrote that “something has changed in Kabaeva’s face”, adding that “the legendary athlete was beautiful”.
The magazine suggested that Kabaeva was a kind of unofficial ‘first lady’ of the country: “Alina Kabaeva is one of the most mysterious women in our country. “The gymnast never appears in public or on social networks, nor is it possible to see her by chance on the street or in shopping malls.”
Putin has reportedly been linked to the gymnast for a decade, since he was a member of the Kremlin parliament.
Many in Russia say she is the reason for the breakdown of Putin’s first marriage to former First Lady Ludmila, 63, who is the mother of his two daughters.
