Serbia’s political position has never been “heavier” and more complicated than that, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said in Berlin after a meeting with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
His comments came in the wake of statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who in a meeting in Moscow with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres compared Kosovo’s case to that of Donetsk and Luhansk. The situation in which Serbia finds itself, given the crisis in Ukraine, Vucic said, is “almost impossible”.
Commenting on the war and the attitude of Belgrade found “between two fires”, he underlined that Serbia is in a very difficult position today and the pressure on it is great. “On the third day of the attack in Ukraine, we made clear our strategic position. “Serbia is in the same position on the 71st day,” said Vucic.
However, when asked if Serbia will make a turn in politics precisely because of the pressure it is under, he stressed that his country is on the path to European integration and does not deviate from it. Serbia is the only country in the Western Balkans that has not taken sanctions against Russia, due to the occupation of Ukraine.
