The Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia, Dimitar Kovacevski, and the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, have expressed their disappointment with the European Union after the end of the summit held in Brussels on Thursday.
Albania and Northern Macedonia, although meeting all the conditions, have not yet started negotiations for admission as EU candidates, due to the Bulgarian veto. Bulgaria has blocked the integration process for northern Macedonia due to a dispute between the two countries over the language issue and its historical past.
Kovacevski said on Thursday that he had rejected the French proposal for resolving the dispute with Bulgaria.
“I thank President Macron for his commitment, but for the proposal to be acceptable it must guarantee some essential issues, for the Macedonian language and identity,” Kovacevski said at a joint conference with Rama and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
France, which holds the rotating EU presidency until July 1, has been supporting the search for a solution to the dispute for several weeks.
The French proposal contains several points, among which: Northern Macedonia must confirm to the UN that it has no territorial claims against Bulgaria, that it will include the Bulgarian minority in the Constitution, that it will rehabilitate the victims of Yugoslav communism, and harmonize the texts. in accordance with the work of the history commissions, will remove all signs that spread hate speech against Bulgarians and Bulgaria, while the two countries will send one-sided views on their positions on the Macedonian language.
Speaking at a conference after the EU summit with Western Balkan leaders, Kovacevski said he had expressed dissatisfaction with the dynamics of accession negotiations.
“What has happened now is a blow to the EU’s credibility,” he said.
The Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, also expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of progress on the road to EU membership.
“Let me express my regret for the EU, I feel sorry for them, I hope we can help,” he said.
He said he did not hope for much progress on the issue before coming to the summit.
“We have a lot to do. “As long as we continue on our European path, we hope that in the next century we will be members”, said Rama.
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vuiqi., Also spoke about this issue at a joint conference with the leaders of Northern Macedonia and Albania.
These three are also the initiators of the Open Balkans, which aims at economic cooperation between the three countries.
President Vuiqi tha said that at the summit he expressed his support for the start of negotiations for Albania and Northern Macedonia.
