Prime Minister Edi Rama spoke about the Russian and Chinese vaccine, explaining that Albania has not taken formal steps as they are not authorized and do not have quantities available.
Regarding the rumors that they do not have enough budget, Rama stressed that it has nothing to do with this and no matter how much the price increases, it will not prevent the government from providing the right doses to vaccinate every Albanian against Covid-19 .
Edi Rama: I have followed this debate and I want to make a clarification for everyone. Let no one think that the Chinese or Russian vaccine is on the counter and show up to pay to get it. It’s not like that. And any state that has declared the agreement has received nothing. Get the number of vaccinated in Russia. It is not that the quantities available are large. Perhaps what I have said has been misunderstood in an adequate form, forgetting what I have pointed out at the outset that we have no reason in the world that we have any doubt about the value of these vaccines, but on the one hand they are still unapproved at the WHO level.
This does not mean that we are staying away and on the other hand, we are not thinking and we have no reason to think that being completely aligned with the EU, we have some precedent, any priority in the very long queue even for those vaccines. So I have not changed my mind and the reason is in what I said. It is not a geopolitical issue in the banal sense, but a political struggle across the planet for the vaccine. You see here and there that all sorts of theses and bullshit are thrown. It is economic and trade war that there is no quantity.
It is also a war that depends on the level of relations between one country and another and on personal relations. It may seem strange, but it also depends on personal relationships. In any case, I want to make it clear that we do not have these vaccines available and we are rejecting them. We have not taken and will not take formal steps towards these two sources because we are aware that they have no objective reasons to lead us to these results.
The Chinese vaccine is clearly successful, just look at Turkey, the UAE and the effects are very positive. So for the Russian vaccine are words that make a positive assessment. But look at the countries that have turned their heads in that direction and it does not turn out that most of them have still received the vaccine and we do these tests.
One thing everyone should know, it is not a matter of money, prices are rising because demand is feverish and supply is low. No matter how much the prices increase, we will not let a single Albanian wait beyond what we have the opportunity to do. I say to tell people who think it ‘s a matter of economic power and budget, no, they’re not in the market. There are no open doors in front of us and we do not cross them.
