The Court of Appeal in Paris has today rejected a series of rape charges against the well-known French director.
The director of the films ‘Big Blue’ and ‘Nikita’ has been accused by Belgian actress Sand Van Roy in 2018 of raping her several times over the past two years.
Prosecutors had dropped their case in 2019 citing a lack of evidence as the reason, but reopened the investigation a year later when Van Roy made new charges.
Besson’s lawyer said today that the court had confirmed his client’s innocence.
“Almost ten indictments by Van Roy have ended in the same way. “Luc Besson feels sorry for these lost years,” said Thierry Marembert.
Van Roy’s lawyer, Antoine Gitton, said the case had become a “dirty topic in the local daily press” and announced he would appeal the decision.
The case has been one of the highest profile cases of the feminist era #MeToo in France, writes the AFP network.
Van Roy has accused Besson of raping her a few hours after they first met at a hotel in Paris in May 2018.
But the initial investigation was closed when prosecutors said they did not have enough evidence.
At least three other women have accused the 63-year-old of sexual misconduct during their testimony in court.
Besson has always denied the allegations while in 2019 he described the case as a “from A to Z”.
The director has previously described Van Roy, who has starred in films known in France as ‘Taxi 5’ and ‘Valerian’, as “a fantasy”, but admits to having had sex with him.
Screenwriter Besson is known for ‘cult’ films such as Subway, Leon and ‘The Fifth Element’.
