Residents of the Alimos area in the Greek capital were surprised this morning when they saw a small whale on the sea shore floating just a few meters off the coast.
It is suspected that the little whale lost its orientation as a result of the sonar of warships sailing just a few miles further, at the Salamina military base.
Surprising is the fact that it has sailed alone to the shores of Athens, while usually the only whales sailing to the Aegean Sea cross south of the Cretan coast, more than 300 nautical miles from Athens.
The whale was examined by veterinarians who say it may have been sick or it was technical causes (sonar) that brought it ashore.
Navy divers also came to the aid of veterinarians, who took her out to sea, but again she returned to shore.
Experts will try to take her out to sea again, while blood samples are taken to find out if she suffers from any disease.
