The Sahara Desert is covered in snow after temperatures dropped below zero.
This is a very rare phenomenon in the largest desert in the world, where the maximum temperature has been 58 degrees C.
Photographer Karim Bouchettarealized the photos as overnight temperatures dropped to -2 degrees.
This is only the fifth time in the last 42 years that snow has been seen on the sand.
In the past, this has happened in 1979, 2016, 2018 and 2021. Ain Sefra, also known as the “Desert Gate”, lies about 910 meters above sea level and is surrounded by the Atlas Mountains.
The Sahara Desert forms the largest part of North Africa and there have been several times changes in temperature and humidity in the last hundreds of thousands of years.
