The councilors of a Paris town where rats have spread in alarming numbers have caused outrage among citizens by proposing that the rats should be “renamed” so that people do not consider them prejudiced.
According to them, this can ease the crisis of many cities in the country that are being raided by the spread of dirty rodents.
City councilors argue that the city’s rat infestation crisis is only exacerbated by human bias, so a new name is needed to remove the stigma.
Douchka Markovic, responsible for the control of parasitic animals in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, proposed in serious tones, the name change, instead of intensifying the campaign to eliminate the animals.
The woman in the public post said: “They play an important role in the sewers by eliminating hundreds of tons of waste and unblocking the pipes, so they should not be considered enemies.”
The rat population in the French capital has now reached double the human population.
Markovic, a council member from the Socialist-Green coalition, proposed the new name “surmulots” – an old term for common rats, which she said could reduce the public problem as it sounded “less negative”.
Markovic urged officials to stop killing or poisoning them, calling for more ethical population reduction techniques such as sterilization with contraceptives.
But the French medical academy said rats posed a “threat to human health from the many diseases they spread through parasites, droppings, bites and scratches”.
Paris and Marseilles in the south are among the most rat-infested cities in the world, the academy said, as it called for eradication measures and cleaning up food waste.
