The vaccine commission in Germany said Thursday that people who have passed COVID-19 should only receive one dose of the vaccine produced by the British company AstraZeneca and Oxford University.
The decision is expected to enable more people to be vaccinated against the coronavirus, as states face shortages of vaccine doses. A dose of AstraZeneca should be administered to a patient who was diagnosed with COVID-19 six months ago, the Standing Committee on Vaccines said in a press release.
Germany has faced a refusal of citizens to receive the AstraZeneca vaccine, as during clinical studies for this vaccine, persons over 65 years of age were not included.
This has led some German state leaders to call for the AstraZeneca vaccine to be given to young people. According to preliminary data, the AstraZenecas Vaccine is 63.9 percent effective against coronavirus-borne COVID-19. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Germany has registered over 2.4 million cases of the disease, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
