In today’s referendum, Swiss citizens backed the far-right proposal to ban the wearing of the niqab and burqa by some Muslim women in the country.
The ban will apply to covering people in public places such as restaurants, sports facilities, public transport or during walks.
The exception may be the wearing of the niqab and burqa in religious sites or in the case of safety and health reasons, such as wearing masks to protect against coron infection with the virus, reports Reuters.
The Swiss government opposed the move as it considered face covering a “marginal” social issue and warned that tourism would be jeopardized because most women who come to Switzerland as tourists come from rich Arab countries where women cover their faces.
Proponents of the law have argued that wearing a headscarf symbolizes the oppression of women and that measures are needed to preserve the principle of facial expression in a free society such as Switzerland.
