A poor Indian woman claiming to be the heiress of the dynasty that built the Taj Mahal is seeking to be granted ownership of the imperial palace in New Delhi.
“I hope that today, tomorrow or anytime, I will be given what belongs to me. “God willing, I will take it,” said Sultana Begum, claiming to come from the line of former Mughal emperors.
Begum lives in an old two-room clay hut on the outskirts of Calcutta, and survives on a small state pension.
Among her modest possessions are memories of her marriage to Mirza Mohammad Bedar, whom she says is the great-grandson of the last Mughal ruler.
Her husband’s death in 1980 left her in difficult survival conditions, but for years she has not given up on claims for compensation.
“Can you imagine the descendant of the one who built the Taj Mahal living in these conditions?” The 68-year-old said in an interview with AFP. Begum has filed a lawsuit in court to be recognized as the heiress of the massive 17th-century Red Fort in New Delhi.
The castle was once the seat of power of the Mughal dynasty.
Her claims have been backed by royal sympathizers but without the power needed to raise her voice.
The woman says her husband belongs to the bloodline of the last Indian god Bahadur Shah Zafar.
Zafar came to power in 1837, at a time when western Mughal had shrunk much since the conquest of India by British colonizers.
