Famous oriental dancer and business analyst Yekaterina ‘Katya’ Zavalishina, 33, has been arrested on suspicion of high treason and ‘espionage’ as she flew away from Moscow.
The international dancer faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Zavalishina, 33, who works regularly as a business analyst, is accused of passing state secrets to representatives of a foreign country.
It has not yet been revealed which country she was dealing with, but the arrest was made while trying to fly from Moscow to Switzerland.
Zavalishina was detained in the capital by FSB intelligence officers, who told the state-run TASS news agency: “Moscow resident ES Zavalishina has been detained for high treason. “The investigative group had requested her arrest.”
It is not yet clear whether its issue is related to the conflict in Ukraine, or whether any Western country is related to the issue.
A court spokesman said: “Under Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code (‘High treason’) she has been detained for further investigation.”
Her mother Larisa, 58, said Zavalishina had to go to work in Switzerland and had left her dog to be cared for while she was away.
“She has always worked with foreigners, but all the information has been open, public.”
Issues of betrayal have been on the rise in Russia in recent years.
