30,000 troops will take part in the massive military exercise that Moscow is conducting with Belarus in front of the frightened eyes of Ukraine.
The 10-day maneuvers come at a time when Russian pressure on the neighboring country continues to remain unchanged with over 100,000 soldiers gathered at the border.
NATO described the exercise as “the largest movement of Russian forces in former Soviet Belarus since the end of the Cold War.” While the White House described these as actions that further escalate tensions over Ukraine.
Belarussian leader Alexander Lukashenko is a staunch ally of Vladimir Putin.
The Kremlin backed him when opposition protests erupted in Belarus in 2020, while most Western countries imposed sanctions and refused to recognize election results which were widely believed to have been rigged in favor of Lukashenko.
Now, the Belarusian leader is returning the favor. Although Moscow claims it has no plans to attack, and says it still believes in a diplomatic solution to the situation, a Kremlin spokesman described the joint exercises as “serious” and said Russia and Belarus were “facing unprecedented threats”.
