Russian forces bombed the Ukrainian port city of Odessa on Monday evening, with reports of casualties, including a 15-year-old boy.
A 17-year-old girl is in hospital in serious condition. Both they and several other people were in a residential building damaged by the rocket attack. “The enemy has hit the urban infrastructure in Odessa, including a cult object. “Because of this attack, there are dead and injured,” said local officials.
Since Russia launched the unprovoked war on February 24, its troops have failed to take control of any major Ukrainian cities. The United States has warned that Moscow is planning to formally take control of the eastern regions of Ukraine.
Michael Carpenter, the US ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), has said that Russia is aiming to annex the Donetsk and Luhansk territories in the Donbas region through referendums after failing to overthrow the government in Kiev.
Russia has faced fierce resistance in the regions around Kiev and Chernihiv, so it has moved troops south and east of the country as fighting intensifies in recent days. Ukraine’s southeast is a strategic area for Russia, as it enables ties with Crimea.
Moscow has raised concerns that it could expand even further, namely in Moldova’s breakaway region of Transnistria, which is backed by Russia and countries bordering Ukraine. Moldova shares a border with Romania, a NATO member.
