Russian state media reported that Moscow would open new humanitarian corridors in several Ukrainian cities today to allow civilians to evacuate.
The announcement of the Russian Ministry of Defense mentions some important residential centers such as Kiev, Kharkiv, Sumy and Mariupol. But on the part of the Ukrainians, there is only silence.
Moscow’s claims have been received with skepticism, not unjustly. Twice the opening of the roads failed to allow the inhabitants to leave Mariupol, in the southeast of the country, and the evening of the day before, some civilians, including two children, were killed near Kiev; their only fault was that they sought to escape the bombs and the horror of a war they had never thought would come to them.
Ukrainian officials say Russia continued to bomb Mariupol during the hours of the ceasefire, openly violating it and causing confusion among the people, who began to retreat again. This morning, Russian artillery fire hit the port city of Mykolaiv.
In a Facebook post, his mayor, Oleksandr Senkevych, wrote that Moscow forces had targeted residential buildings and posted pictures of a burning apartment block. He warned that there are many unexploded ordnance in the city.
“Be careful not to approach them, lift them up or try to move them from the place yourself,” Senkevych said. The new Russian attack came a day after Ukrainian forces repulsed an enemy attack and regained control of the local airport.
Despite the attacks, Russian forces, according to British defense officials, have advanced slightly over the past 48 hours, hampered by Ukrainian resistance and weak logistical support. “It is unlikely that Moscow has achieved any of its objectives according to the timetable,” said the intelligence report of the Ministry of Defense in London.
