Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky once again openly expressed his disappointment with NATO after the alliance refused to establish a no-fly zone, which the West seeks to avoid in order not to be on a direct collision course with Moscow.
In a video conference call with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other European leaders, Zelensky said NATO was “the strongest alliance in the world” – but “some members of this alliance are fascinated by Russian aggression”.
Zelensky: We hear a lot of talk about World War III, that supposedly could start if NATO closes the skies of Ukraine for Russian missiles and planes and for this reason the humanitarian no-fly zone has not yet been established. This allows the Russian military to bomb our peaceful cities and blow up apartment blocks, hospitals and schools. Four high-rise buildings in Kiev were bombed in the early hours of the day, with dozens dead.
His displeasure erupted on the very day the EU approved a new round of sanctions against Moscow. Zelensky thinks more needs to be done, although the new measures include halting investment in Russia’s energy sector, exports of luxury goods and imports of steel products from Russia. The sanctions, which take effect after being published in the EU’s official gazette today, also freeze the assets of many pro-Russian business leaders – including Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich. They will hit hard on Russia’s major oil companies – Rosneft, Transneft and Gazprom Neft – although EU member states may continue to buy oil and gas from them.
