Russia is stepping up pressure on major Internet companies. According to a court in Moscow, Google did not delete “illegal” content and was therefore fined about $ 98 million.
A court in Moscow fined Google 7.2 billion rubles. The reason given by the court is that the American internet company has repeatedly failed to delete content that Russia considers illegal. Google said it would review the decision and then decide on possible steps.
For the first time, the amount of the fine was based on a certain percentage of the annual turnover that Google generates in Russia – which increases the amount of the fine. However, the court did not specify how high this percentage is. According to calculations it is a little over eight percent. The value of the sentence is about $ 98 million.
The Moscow government has stepped up pressure on major tech concerns this year. Critics see this as an attempt by the government to tighten control of the internet. They fear that this threatens the freedom of individuals and companies. Authorities argue that Internet companies should delete posts that promote drug abuse or that contain information about homemade weapons and explosives. Also, information related to terrorist organizations should not be disseminated.
