Through an unprecedented decision 10,00 fans will be able to watch the Champions League final for free.
The move by the European Football Association (UEFA) runs counter to the organization of the American football final, the Super Bowl, on Sunday.
The cheapest tickets for this event have cost thousands of euros.
According to the UEFA decision, each club will receive 5,000 tickets for the final that will take place in St. Petersburg, Russia on May 28.
Tickets should be distributed to loyal supporters and not to sponsors or club officials.
“Football fans are the blood of the game,” UEFA President Alexander Ceferin said in a statement.
“We thought that this way we would understand the difficulties they have experienced in the last two years and again managed to support their teams and live with passion even when they are away from the stadiums.”
The group, European Football Supporters, has welcomed the UEFA decision, acknowledging the importance of crowds during matches.
“Fans do not have an unlimited amount of money to spend on football,” the group said in a statement.
“We are delighted that with this positive move, UEFA has acknowledged the fact that persistent inflation in ticket prices is increasingly excluding more and more people from watching matches.”
