Russian forces have intensified their offensive to take control of Ukraine’s eastern region of Donbas, and have bombed the city of Kharkiv, killing nine people and wounding 19 others, Ukrainian military officials say.
Kiev has warned that the situation in the east of the state is worse than publicly believed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Moscow of committing “genocide” in the east of the country, where the Russians have advanced into two key cities, Severodonjeck and Lisyansk, and called on the West not to “play” with Russia and help at the end of the war.
In his speech late Thursday, Zelensky condemned Moscow’s brutal attacks on two Donbas cities, adding that the bombings could leave the entire region “uninhabitable”.
“All of this, including the deportation of our people and the mass killings of civilians, is a clear policy of genocide committed by Russia,” Zelensky said.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on May 26 that the military situation in eastern Ukraine was even worse than people thought.
Kuleba said Ukraine needed heavy weapons to fight Russia effectively and said peace talks with Russia were not taking place.
In its latest update, the British Ministry of Defense has said that although Russian ground forces continue to increase pressure on Severodonjeck, Ukraine continues to have control of many regions, denying Moscow’s claim that it controls all of Donbas.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered on February 24 what he calls a “special military operation” to demilitarize Ukraine.
The West has responded with harsh sanctions on Russia, targeting the state’s economy and Russian oligarchs.
