Moscow says that since 2014 Washington has been constantly threatening to exclude it from the global digital bank transfer system SWIFT.
But a Russian foreign ministry official said today that there was no chance the threats would materialize.
In an interview with RIA Novosti, ministry spokesman Dmitriy Birichevsky said that SWIFT, at least formally, is a private company based in Belgium so it is not entirely clear how the US can persuade them to exclude Russia.
“We all understand that the US influence is great and we are ready for any surprise,” said the diplomat.
“However, there is no real possibility for Russia to secede from SWIFT, we have stated this several times.”
According to Birichevsky, the threat of expulsion from SWIFT “returns periodicallyAnd then disappears without anything happening.
His most serious expression was when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, following a referendum held on the peninsula. The West considers the vote illegitimate and the peninsula as occupied by Moscow.
This week Olga Skorobogatova, a representative of the Bank of Russia, suggested that the country would not be excluded from the global digital transfer system as this would bring profits to other countries as well.
“SWIFT is a cooperative with more than 100 countries,” she said. “We hope this does not happen as other profits and regulatory bodies lose.”
Earlier this month, CNN reported, citing anonymous sources, that the White House was considering imposing sanctions on Russia and exempting it from the SWIFT system to prevent a possible invasion of Ukraine. The Kremlin has reiterated that it is not planning a military incursion into the neighboring country. / Source: RussiaToday/
