Russia will not use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexei Zaitsev.
Zaitsev told reporters on Friday that Russia’s use of nuclear weapons was not in line with Moscow’s intentions to invade Ukraine.
“[Armët bërthamore] “They can not be used to achieve the goals set out in the framework of the special military operation in Ukraine,” he said.
Zaitsev said that according to Russia’s nuclear doctrine, these types of weapons can be used only if the existence of the state is endangered.
Western officials have publicly expressed their concerns about the risk of using nuclear weapons in the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
The Kremlin has said that statements by Western officials on the issue risk escalating the situation, although Russian President Vladimir Putin, shortly after the start of the invasion of Ukraine, ordered that the country’s nuclear forces be put on high alert.
