Shaun Pinner, one of the two British citizens sentenced to death by the pro-Russian authorities in Donetsk, has appealed the decision, thus trying to escape death by firing squad.
The news was confirmed for the Russian Interfax agency by Pinner’s lawyer, who said that the authorities will now have two months to consider the request. “If they refuse, we will draw up a petition for forgiveness. The client has requested this, and I am obliged to carry out his will to the end”, lawyer Yulia Tserkovnikova is quoted as saying.
Pinner is one of three foreign volunteers facing death today after being captured by Russian troops while fighting alongside Ukrainian forces. Although they have officially served in the Ukrainian army, both Russia and the authorities supported by it in Donetsk have described them as “mercenaries” and accused them of attempting to seize power by force. The other captured Briton, Aiden Aslin, seems to also intend to challenge the decision, but does not believe “that the appeal will have a positive outcome”.
Moroccan national Brahim Saadoun, the third inmate on death row, is also said to be preparing the same request. The European Court of Human Rights published two days ago premature measures instructing Russia not to carry out the death penalty against two Britons. Aslin and Pinner were captured by Russian-backed forces in Mariupol in April during fierce fighting for control of the city. Moroccan Saadun surrendered in March while fighting in a small town in the Donetsk region.
Britain, the United Nations, Ukraine and Germany have unanimously condemned the death sentences handed down to foreign soldiers who fought alongside Kiev’s troops.
