Russia has threatened Finland with war, following the country’s position on NATO membership.
In a statement, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said the Kremlin would be forced to respond to Finland’s NATO approach with ‘military retaliatory steps’.
““Finland’s accession to NATO is a radical change in the country’s foreign policy.”said in a statement the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“Russia will be forced to take retaliatory steps, both military-technical and other in nature, in order to stop the emergence of threats to its national security“, Stressed the Kremlin.
The threat comes after Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin unanimously demanded that Finland join NATO “without delay”. The two leaders said in a joint statement that they await a decision in the coming days.
This statement is the strongest signal so far that Finland will indeed seek membership in the North Atlantic Alliance, a historic move for the Nordic country that for decades has preferred to maintain a policy of neutrality. The move by local leaders comes amid growing public support for Finland’s NATO membership spurred by the invasion of Ukraine. Finland, which shares a 1,300-kilometer border with Russia, now feels threatened. It has so far stayed out of NATO precisely to avoid the antagonism of its eastern neighbor.
