Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg expects the European Union to adopt new sanctions against Russia over the case of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.
“Such a step can be taken when the EU foreign ministers meet on Monday,” he told the German daily Welt am Sonntag. “We will discuss in the Foreign Affairs Council the appropriate actions in the case of Navalnyt “, said Schallenberg. The measures he cites may include targeting certain individuals and organizations under the new EU mechanism for punishing human rights violators. Schallenberg made it clear that he expects “support” for sanctions from the 27 EU countries, although he added that sanctions should be well thought out and have a legal basis.
He stressed that many people have started cases in the courts, so as to be removed from the list of EU sanctions, in the absence of sufficient data. Navalny’s appeals were dismissed in two separate cases on Saturday. In the first case, the court rejected his request for release from prison, but reduced his prison term by six weeks to two and a half years, respectively. Later in the day, he was fined heavily for insulting a World War II veteran. Both trials are considered politically motivated.
