Russia said Wednesday night that 498 of its military troops had been killed in Ukraine, in the first such announcement since launching an invasion operation last week.
“498 Russian servicemen have been deployed,” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Konashenkov said in a televised message, adding that “1,597 comrades have been wounded.”
Ukraine says the death toll among the Russian military is much higher.
Moscow had previously admitted human losses but had not provided figures.
Konashenkov said he wanted to “emphasize again that no new cadets or recruits are taking part in the special operation.”
Independent organizations that help parents find their children told the French news agency AFP that recruits performing regular military service are also involved in the conflict.
But Konashenkov said Russia’s biggest losses were those stemming from “centralized disinformation” by Western news agencies.
Last Thursday, Russian President Putin ordered the launch of a military operation after weeks of accumulating mass forces near Ukraine’s borders.
He said the Russian military would “de-Nazify and demilitarize” Ukraine, which he said had bombed and discriminated against the Russian-speaking population in the eastern regions.
